The problem with libertarianism is that inorder for libertarianism to work we have to all be born free and equal. I also don’t believe, as libertarians do that we are as people fully independent in ourselves.
I have come to think of the Libertarian ideology as a heterosexist philosophy. I suppose a women could believe that she is born free and equal, but most of us hopefully 1. realize we are not considered equal before the law or socially in the united states and 2. through this realization come to realize we are certainly not the only minority but that in fact there is a system to maintaining power through the fear and oppression of many minorities.
Rand Paul, a Pro Life “constitutional conservative” doesn’t even see women as people so much as a vessel, he believes he is being a good libertarian in fighting for the civil rights of this unborn fetus- never mind that the fetus comes/is part of a women. We are not individually fully independent, as new agey as it sounds we are part of a network, sometimes, in the case of pregnancy quite literally.
The myth we all want to believe specifically as Americans is that we are somehow fully born, self owning, without conditions or ties-that individuals make the best decisions…but where do individuals come from? And in what kind of society are we born into?
We aren’t born free at all, some of us are born very privileged, these people if they really believed in the ideas of libertarianism would feel indebted as individuals to correct the inequalities of our society. I would also hope that they would come to realize the best way for minorities and themselves to equal the playing field would be to join in group and discussions to find the best way for everyone to be able to get what they need/want as individuals.
